COMPOSITES EUROPE 2018: Focus on process technologies

download_presse-all_presse2018_ce_2018_messevorschau_584_behrendt-und-rausch_web_680_300

• Premiere: “Process live” format
• Lightweight Technologies Forum to present hybrid lightweight construction
• Trade fair kick-off event: International Composites Congress (ICC)

In the competition of lightweight construction and design materials, composites are among the winners – automotive engineering, aerospace, wind energy, boatbuilding and construction can no longer do without glass- and carbon-fibre reinforced plastics (GFRP & CFRP). Nevertheless, the greatest impetus right now is coming from the composites industry itself: technological advancements in the process chain. From 6 to 8 November, COMPOSITES EUROPE in Stuttgart will drive home that point.

Trade fair visitors will meet more than 350 exhibitors from 30 countries who in Stuttgart will present state-of-the-art technology and the potential of fibre-reinforced composites – in the exhibition area as well as in numerous event areas, lecture forums and themed tours.

With the new “Process live” format, coordinated processing and manufacturing processes will become the visible focus of this year’s COMPOSITES EUROPE. Mechanical and plant engineering companies will get together in group exhibits to showcase their technologies in live interactions – thus enabling visitors to experience sub-processes presented in a larger context.

Partnerships in the process chain accelerate growth in the industry

Among others, the cutting specialists Gunnar (Switzerland), the composites automation experts Airborne (Netherlands) and the gripping systems providers Schmalz (Germany) will join forces to create a combined production cell in a process-safe depiction of the entire value chain from roller materials to the finished layer structure of a composite component. In this setup, interlocking hardware components are fully connected with each other via software. “Cooperation among processors is getting closer and closer. These partnerships within the process chain are accelerating the growth of the composites industry; that’s what we want to show with the new ‘Process live’ format”, says Olaf Freier, event director of COMPOSITES EUROPE.

Lightweight Technologies Forum: Platform for multi-material lightweight construction

Besides the optimisation of the process chain, industry research today is heavily focused on the use of GFRP and CFRP in multi-material systems. The Lightweight Technologies Forum will once again demonstrate how composites play to their strengths alongside other materials in the material mix for hybrid structural components. A total of 16 exhibitors will present materials, tools and exhibits here – from fillers to bonding agents and presses for laminating different materials to semi-finished hybrid products.

In various presentations, experts will provide an overview of new products in manufacturing and joining technology as well as applications and lightweight engineering references from the automotive, aerospace and construction sectors. Support for the Lightweight Technologies Forum is provided by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

From digitalisation to recycling: Know-how in the supporting programme

A presentation programme, themed tours and special areas complete the COMPOSITES EUROPE lineup. Manufacturing technology, recycling, digitalisation and thermoplastics will be central themes in the programme of the COMPOSITES Forum, which will also feature exhibitors presenting application examples from automotive engineering, aerospace, construction, mechanical engineering, wind energy and shipbuilding.

Themed guided tours, meanwhile, will lead visitors straight to the stands of selected exhibitors ready to explain the latest innovations in fibreglass, thermoplastics, automotive engineering, wind energy and construction.

Special areas and group stands to highlight new ideas

Hosting the special area “Industry meets Science”, the Institute of Plastics Processing (IKV), the leading European research institute for plastics technology based in Aachen, will showcase developments in process technology, design, quality assurance and repair.

The exhibitors at the “Bio-Based Composites Pavilion”, which will again be set up in cooperation with the nova-Institute, will reflect the development of the market for green composites. The focus will be on application options of wood-polymer composites (WPC), natural fibre composites (NFC), bio-based thermoplastics and thermosets for composites, and bio-based plastics.

Moreover, numerous young companies will thrill visitors with fresh ideas: the industry newcomers will present themselves at a group stand funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). They will cover a wide range of topics from semi-finished carbon-fibre products to metal foams to production lines for multi-material 3D fibre laminates.

Even the automotive experts of tomorrow will have their own forum at the trade fair: under the banner of “Formula Student”, students and apprentices will show visitors racecars they themselves have designed.

Kick-off event: 4th International Composites Congress (ICC)

The International Composites Congress (ICC) will once again kick off COMPOSITES EUROPE. In a series of presentations starting the day before the trade fair (5 and 6 November), international experts at the event with the headline topic “Composites – On the Path to Becoming a Key Industry?” will speak about and discuss applications, materials, process technologies and market prospects.

Lightweight construction boasts big market potential for fibre composites

  • Multi-material lightweight construction on the advance
  • Lightweight Technologies Forum in parallel with COMPOSITES EUROPE

download_presse-all_presse2018_ce_2018_leichtbau_160-5065_web_680_300

Mega trend: lightweight construction. Weight reduction is one of the most important development criteria across numerous growth industries – not only in the automotive industry, aviation, mechanical engineering and wind power, but also in infrastructure, medical technology and in the marine and sports and leisure sector. Weight is not only reduced by using lighter materials but also by integrating functions and focusing more on load and material driven engineering. This can also be seen in Stuttgart at COMPOSITES EUROPE from 6 to 8 November 2018 as well as at the Lightweight Technologies Forum, which is taking place in parallel.

Interface between integrative and hybrid lightweight construction

Fibre composites bring their strengths to bear especially in multi-material lightweight construction. It has now become clear that the requirements of modern lightweight construction can no longer be met by single materials – optimum solutions can only be achieved with hybrid lightweight construction. The Lightweight Technologies Forum at COMPOSITES EUROPE shows, for the third time, how the application sectors of integrative and hybrid lightweight construction can be brought together. The combined exhibition and lecture forum serves as a cross-material interface between metal and fibre composite technologies in structural components. In applications-oriented themed sessions expert practitioners will address current issues related to composite materials in the automotive, aviation & aerospace and architecture sectors. Participation in the Forum is included in the admission ticket for visitors to COMPOSITES EUROPE. For further information on the forum content go to: http://www.lite-forum.com

Longer range thanks to lightweight construction

The innovation drivers for lightweight construction are the aerospace and automotive industries: each kilogramme saved on a means of transport means one kilogramme extra payload. A 100 kilogramme lighter car consumes around 0.5 litres less fuel per 100 km. With electric vehicles, the range increases accordingly. An Airbus A 320 requires 10,000 litres less kerosene per year if it weighs 100 kilogrammes less. Considering that materials account for 44.3 percent of the costs in the manufacturing industry, the savings potential available here quickly becomes clear

Policy-makers and end users are the major drivers

Especially in integrative lightweight automotive construction innovations are as important as ever today. This is clearly evidenced by the current market study “Leichtbau als Innovationstreiber” (Lightweight Construction as an Innovation Driver) published by Automotive Management Consulting GmbH (AMC) and COMPOSITES EUROPE organiser Reed Exhibitions. It presents the status quo as well as trends and future challenges of multi-material lightweight construction in the automotive industry. According to the report, policymakers and end users are currently the biggest drivers of lightweight construction. The results of the study show, however, that the consistent implementation of lightweight construction solutions is often foiled by suppliers and manufacturers.

Political debate stimulates the market

Published by Carbon Composites e.V. and AVK, the “Composites Market Report 2017” covers the lightweight construction potential of GFPs and CRFPs in detail. The report reads: “Against the background of the current political debate (diesel scandal, advance of e-mobility, accelerated energy transit, tightened CO2 regulations), further laws and tax adjustments could provide a positive stimulus for the lightweight construction market. Carbon fibre-reinforced composites are a key growth driver within the overall market environment for (fibre-reinforced) lightweight material systems.”

In 2016, global demand for carbon fibre composites totalled some 101,000 metric tons, exceeding the previous year’s figure by around 11%. For the coming years steady and continued, double-digit growth rates in the region of between 10% and 13% are expected. In 2016, the total turnover for CFRP worldwide amounted to about US$ 13.23 billion, an increase of about 14% compared to the previous year.

Competitiveness thanks to natural fibre-reinforced plastics

The experts from the VDI Centre for Resource Efficiency have also described the role of fibre and natural fibre-reinforced plastics in the sphere of lightweight construction materials in their study “Inventory of Lightweight Construction in Germany” published in 2015. According to the study, “there is great potential for further weight reduction through the use of fibre-reinforced plastics (FRP)”. Fibre-reinforced plastics such as GRP and CFRP are currently posting very high growth rates and are very likely to gain in importance in the long term (after 2020). The main growth drivers here are the automotive industry and wind power.

In addition, plastics mechanically reinforced with natural fibres such as hemp, flax or cotton have already become established elements in vehicle manufacturing, especially for vehicle interiors because they are economically competitive. Other advantages are their low tendency to splinter during crashes and their sound insulation. The use of renewable raw materials in the form of biopolymers and natural fibre-reinforced plastics, they say, also offers good opportunities for reducing dependence on crude oil and using renewable resources instead.

Federal German Government funds in excess of 1,000 lightweight construction projects

German industry plays a pioneering role in lightweight construction. The Federal Government and the Länder have already recognised this. In 2017, for example, the Federal Ministry of Economics founded the “Initiative Leichtbau” (lightweight construction initiative), thereby supporting the efficient cross-technology transfer of knowledge among all lightweight construction actors across Germany. A “lightweight construction atlas” was also initiated at the end of 2016. The interactive portal allows organisations to present their processes and activities and search companies and research institutions for tailor-made lightweight construction expertise in the region. The Federal Government’s funding catalogue now lists more than 1,000 lightweight construction projects.

The “Länder” are just as active. The focal research department for lightweight construction at the Landshut University of Applied Sciences recently received funding of around EUR 650,000 from the Bavarian Ministry of Science. The Technical Universities of Dresden, Freiberg and Chemnitz founded the “Leichtbau-Allianz Sachsen” at the end of 2017, which is supported by the Saxon Ministry of Science and is to develop the Free State into one of the world’s leading competence regions in this field. The Agency for Lightweight Construction owned by the “Land” Baden-Württemberg, where COMPOSITES EUROPE is held, also wants to make the state of Baden-Württemberg a world leader in this segment.

AMB 2018 takes the digital path

AMB_Banner2018_EN_468x60_01

New special show entitled „Digital Way“ / Digitalisation with real practical relevance

Current studies prove that German companies see greater potential in digitalisation. The surveyed decision-makers are optimistic that Industry 4.0 can help them achieve higher sales while simultaneously reducing costs. The surveyed companies are expecting sales and cost savings to increase within a space of three years by an average of more than 10 cent, especially due to higher productivity among employees and improved efficiency of machines. “Mechanical engineering and plant construction in Germany is one of the strongest national industries, but also in an international comparison. This position must be strengthened and extended still further. This objective can only be achieved through a leading edge in digitalisation within the framework of Industry 4.0. By staging the “Digital Way” special show during AMB, we want to make the metal cutting industry even more aware of this topic and take account of the high demand for information,” added Kromer von Baerle

The aims of AMB 2018 are to act as a platform for providers and users, and show digital paths. “With this new format AMB will underline its position as the leading exhibition for metal working. Everyone is talking about digitalisation – in the “Digital Way” special show we will show how business and production processes can be optimised in very specific terms and what digital business models are available,” explained Ulrich Kromer von Baerle, CEO of Messe Stuttgart.

In addition to a first-class expert conference, which is being developed in cooperation with the Software and Digitalisation Association in the German Engineering Federation (VDMA), and a supplementary accompanying exhibition, interactive showcases will demonstrate the interaction between networked processes in companies and will explain their value-added. The accompanying exhibition will feature manufacturers of software solutions in the areas of digital business models, digital production, digital product development, digital services & customer service and software development, as well as service providers and manufacturers of hardware. Further opportunities for matchmaking between Digital Way exhibitors, visitors and exhibitors at AMB and conference delegates will be available due to the extended opening hours of Digital Way on the first day of the exhibition with an additional networking event.

“Companies want to know how Industry 4.0 and digitalisation of processes can be implemented. What providers have already successfully implemented projects? What applications or models are available and are relevant to the respective company? The “Digital Way” special show at AMB 2018 will enable us to bring solution-oriented supply and demand together,” explained Gunnar Mey, Department Director Industry at Messe Stuttgart. Messe Stuttgart itself is also exploring new avenues: as of now, exhibition areas can be booked online at http://www.amb-messe.de/digitalway while so-called digital handshakes and live streaming of selected conference topics are planned at AMB 2018.

“Digitalisation certainly contains the most potential for rationalisation in production,” said Dr. Reinhold Walz, Managing Director of GEWATEC GmbH & Co. KG. “Our GEWATEC web Factory at AMB will enable visitors to experience a completely automated production process based on Industry 4.0 criteria. The visitor’s iPhone will trigger the complete process chain with commercial and technical work processes. From costing, confirmation, the delivery note, the invoice, generation of a production or test order and the selection of suitable and free machines through to quality assurance and dispatch, every process runs fully automatically,” said Walz.

Thomas Hösle, Managing Director of Elabo GmbH, a subsidiary of the euromicron Group, added: “There are persistent prejudices that digitalisation standards do not exist, that the implementation costs are too high and that the necessary manpower, especially in small medium-sized companies, is not available. These prejudices must now be eliminated. This trend should also not be ignored because the market punishes those who are too late.” As both a provider and a user of digital solutions with high practical relevance, Elabo knows what medium-sized enterprises now need. “We are mainly focusing on employees and production processes with small series batches and a large number of variants. Thanks to our “bdU solution“ (needs-oriented digitalised support), we can provide a perfect answer to the key question: “What does a production employee need to perform his daily work,” added Hösle. He regards AMB as an ideal platform in this respect. Removed from hectic everyday operations, visitors will have the opportunity to examine specific digitalisation applications of the exhibitors and discuss them with the providers. Elabo will act here “as a tour guide through the digitalisation jungle”.

Prof. Claus Oetter, Deputy Managing Director of the Software and Digitalisation Association in the German Engineering Federation (VDMA), said that the reasons for cooperating in the “Digital Way” special show during AMB are as follows: “Innovation in digitalisation is actually created by the synergy between IT and the software industry and mechanical engineering and plant construction. In the digitalised world only industry can manufacture new products which are beneficial to producers and customers.” Oetter added: “Digitalisation permits entirely new solutions and business models for future products and services in industry.

Whether in areas such as usability or user experience, the digital twin for simulation and commissioning, or machine learning for optimising machining processes and maintenance, the range of topics is enormous and also helps to increase customer loyalty.” The German Engineering Federation will provide information on the spot about its numerous activities and will present new technologies during a live demonstration. These topics will also be examined more closely during an exclusive conference on digitalisation in production.

11th Bondexpo 2017

11th Bondexpo – International trade fair for bonding technology

2017-02-15_102114

With the Bondexpo international trade fair for bonding technology, exhibition company P. E. Schall GmbH & Co. KG has succeeded in establishing the worldwide number one user meeting place within a very short period of time. With a clear and consistent focus on the process chain of joining/bonding by means of gluing, moulding, sealing and foaming, detailed and system solutions are offered for present and future challenges in the field of joining and bonding the broadest range of materials.

The strong development of Bondexpo is a testament to its pioneering role in the industry, which will continue to increase in the future – particularly as the collection of issues concerning bonding and joining new materials now and in the future represents a real challenge for “adhesion technology”. After all, lightweight construction is an issue not only in motor vehicles but also in instruments and equipment. Future materials and material combinations as well as hybrid solutions offer ratio and resource potentials that can be realised only with the use of new adhesives.

Bondexpo conveys the stage of development and the know-how between research and development, use and application, and leads the way in future adhesion, insulation, foaming, sealing and moulding technology. In the trade fair group with the concurrent Motek, the complex topic of adhesion, dosing and applying is presented not in isolation but rather in the context of production technology. Ultimately, the adhesion, moulding, sealing and foaming processes are also ideally suited to highly automated processing by handling and robot systems. In turn, these can be found in all forms at Motek, the world’s leading international trade fair for assembly, handling technology and automation. This combination, which is absolutely routed in practice, is globally unique and guarantees users the best possible information as well as optimum benefit.
